Energy Policy Act

  • Home owners can earn up to $1,500, or 30% of the material purchase cost (whichever is greater) in tax credits for home improvements.
  • Contractors can earn tax credits up to $2,000 during the same time frame.
  • For commercial buildings, building owners can qualify for tax deductions up to $1.80 per square foot for developing an energy efficient building.

All ENERGY STAR® labeled prepainted metal roofs can qualify for the $1, 500 tax credit.

  • The roof must be expected to last 5 years or have a 2 year warranty
  • Installation costs are not included
  • Manufacturer’s Certification Statement is required
  • For tax purposes, receipts should be saved along with the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement
  • The IRS encourages manufacturers to provide these Certifications on their website to facilitate identification of qualified products
  • Homeowner does not have to submit a copy with tax returns
